CHAMOIS

To prepare a real leather shammy (chamois) for use to make your car, bike, or windows shine, you'll want to rinse it thoroughly with clean water to remove any dust, fibers, or oils that might be present. This ensures it's ready to absorb water effectively and won't leave any residue on the surface you're cleaning.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Rinse the shammy:

    • Run the shammy under warm water to remove any dust, fibers, or oils.

    • Wring out the shammy: Squeeze out excess water so it's damp but not soaking wet.

  2. (Optional) Clean the shammy after Use:

    • If your shammy is soiled, you can clean it with a mild, non-alkaline soap or detergent.

    • Soak the shammy: Submerge the shammy in warm, soapy water for a few minutes.

    • Rinse the shammy: Rinse thoroughly with clean water to remove all soap residue.

  3. Soften the shammy after Use:

    • Work the shammy: Rub it against itself, fold it, or stretch it to soften the leather.

    • Use a smooth surface: Work the shammy against a clean, smooth surface (like a workbench) to help soften it.

  4. Store the shammy after Use:

    • Hang the shammy: Hang the shammy to dry in a well-ventilated area away from direct sunlight and heat.

Tips for using and maintaining your shammy:

  • Before each use: Rinse the shammy with clean water and wring it out.

  • After each use: Rinse the shammy thoroughly with clean water to remove any dirt or debris.

  • Avoid harsh chemicals: Don't use harsh detergents or bleaches on your shammy, as they can damage the leather (and the car/bike/window)

  • Store properly: Keep the shammy in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and heat.

In essence, preparing your real leather shammy involves a simple rinse to remove any impurities, followed by a gentle softening process to ensure optimal use and longevity.
